Thanksgiving is upon us and I’m trying to meditate on how thankful I ought to be in light of all I’ve received in life. The natural man’s (or woman’s 🙂 ) tendency is to forget how vast God’s love and blessing has been, take forgranted all he’s been given and instead dwell on what we lack or did not receive. I’ve heard a few things that have stuck with me, humbled me and caused me to be more thankful over the years. I’ll share them with you so you might be as blessed and humbled as I was… (more…)

In the story of Hophni and Phineas, Eli’s disobedient sons, God has shown us what to do as well as what not to in the case of loved ones and His clear commands. In 1Samuel 2 Eli kept his children from punishment the same way we try to keep one another from anything difficult. Who knows, though, if God’s plan is to use those very things to bring about his plan and character in them?
In 1Samuel 2:12, the bible describes Eli’s sons as “corrupt”.
12 Now the sons of Eli were corrupt; they did not know the LORD. ~1Samuel 2:12
Other translations label them “wicked,” “evil,” “worthless,” or “scoundrels.” If you read the chapter, you’ll find that they were taking what people had given to God and keeping it all for themselves and they were also taking advantage and sinning with those who were serving God.
