Compared to Who?

“Do you look at things according to the outward appearance? If anyone is convinced in himself that he is Christ’s, let him again consider this in himself, that just as he is Christ’s, even so we are Christ’s.” ~2 Corinthians 10:7
“Do you look at things according to the outward appearance?” Paul asks. In our day and age (and in that of the Corinthian church), the answer is clearly and overwhelmingly, “Yes!” Obviously, yes, they did and we do. Paul says here, in essence, ‘You look at me and see a nobody. You see someone who irritates you and makes you mad with his teachings. But guess what? I’m your brother in Christ. I am what you are!’

Moments of Truth

In one of Philip Yancey’s books, he says that God inspires us everyday with nuggets of truth through everyday events – we’ve just got to search for them and have a keen awareness to them if we expect to be enlightened by them.

I understand exactly what he means because my kids are always doing things that remind me of God’s ways with us – His children. If I am not paying attention, though, I won’t even notice those God moments in my little world (Timmy calls it “Loriland”).

Yesterday was a beautiful day outside and the kids and I were out in the yard. As Mia surveyed her big backyard she got upset. She said, “Mom! Where did all the flowers (meaning dandelions) go? There’s none left!”

I’ve often studied the issue of faith and deeds and how to examine my own walk with the Lord as well as discerning others’ claims of allegiance to the gospel.  I think it’s interesting and intriguing and I also believe it’s something the bible instructs each of us to do.

5Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test? ~2Corinthians 13:5 (more…)
